CLASS 1

Bringing a traditionally broadcast-first racing series into the digital age.

I took the lead in creating a versatile design system for this all-American, larger-than-life sport which would be able to sustain itself for the full season and into the future.

To draw on current nostalgia-based trends as well as lean into an aesthetic the current audience would be familiar with, I took inspiration from 1980s American design, bringing in bright colours and gradients as well as creating a photo filter reminiscent of film photography so that templates would feel tropical and sunny even on overcast race days.

Having worked with a number of boat racing clients, I was keen to bring a different style of race poster to Class 1 this season, and went with the idea of a set of race posters from a birds eye view, zooming out from the boats and showing off the picturesque locations of the season. Of course, the classic hero graphics still had their place – 160mph boat photography never fails to go down well with powerboat racing fans!
